My experiences with meta_con are quite good. It is very easy to convert a font
with it. But... converting and making it work are two things. E.g. one has to
make decisions about the amount of kerninginfo to extract from the <.cfn>
file. Calamus uses a sort of box around a character where at 8 vertical spots
the width is determined. The next character has the same sort of box and they
are bestfitted to each other. This info has to be translated into MF ligtable
info. And if you want to have reasonably good kerning, you need at least some
10,000 ligtable entries.

Then you want to patch in the TeX specific entries like '' -> ". And the
Spanish upsidedown questionmark. And you have to give them the right place in
the fonttable, because --apart from the A-Za-z0-9 places-- Calamus uses a
different codingscheme.

Another point is that most Calamus fonts are lousy. Good fonts are made up
from one stroke, but most Calamus fonts are made from bits and pieces. These
bits and pieces tend to loose contact when stretching, rotating, converting
etc. I had the best result with PD Type 1 Binary PostScript fonts that I
translated to Calamus format with Didot Line Art. (Not a PD program.)

But, to come back to my first point: if it works, you have a wealth of new
fonts in (portable) MF format. And --although-- people are using PostScript
more and more, IMHO MetaFont is *the* partner for TeX.

EJee.

P.S. One can contact the author Christoph Pagalies as:

  Christoph_Pagalies%MAUS_HH2@P6.F2.N242.Z2.fidonet.org

P.P.S. There is a bug in my version of meta_con: the semicolon is omitted
after the smoothing and autorounding setting. This can easily be adjusted with
any editor.

My zoo (2.01) crashed on this archive (2 bombs). The zoo -test gave no
problems. An old version extracted it without problems.

Subject: Anyone tried the `NewGen TurboPS series' laser printers?

We're about to upgrade our tired old Apple LaserWriters, and have
stumbled across the NewGen TurboPS 840 and 840e printers. Has anyone
tried these with TeX -- particularly the 840e, which claims 800 x 400
dpi resolution? Are there other candidates worth looking at? Our
primary requirement is parallel and appletalk interfaces and the
capability to attach a SCSI disc to it.

Subject: dvi file manipulators for DOS

Following up a previous announcement, I can now offer you a complete
set of MSDOS utilities to manipulate dvi files or PostScript files:

[.drivers.seetex.dviselect]dviselec.boo dviselect
[.drivers.seetex.dviconcat]dvicon.boo dviconcat
[.drivers.dvibook]dvibook.boo dvibook
[.drivers.dvidvi]dvidvi.boo dvidvi
[.psbook]psbook.boo psbook, pstops, psselect

All these are ZIP files coded as BOO containing MSDSO executables
and a brief description of the programs by (respectively) Chris Torek (x2),
Angus Duggan, Tom Rokicki and Angus Duggan. They let you perform, between
them, all the pagination and subset selections you are likely to want to do.

The above filenames refer to the UK TeX Archive.

I dont guarantee these MSDOS ports much. Its the first time I have had
to deal with the horrors of far pointers and 64k segments, so they may fall
over on tests which differ from mine. Use Unix if you have it, is my advice...
